Machine Learning, Cognitive Computing, and Big Data – Event Looks at Their Role in Recruiting and Retaining Talent


Recruiting and retaining talent is an ongoing battle for many organizations, particularly in the area of knowledge work. Technology, big data and analytics have a major role to play in this area.

Companies are rethinking their approach to career paths, which are central in creating effective talent-management systems to recruit, develop and retain hard-to-replace high performers, especially among knowledge workers.  With intense competition for top talent, effective career paths can play a critical role in an organization’s achieving its human capital strategic goals.

The NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s Department of Technology Management and Innovation is hosting a conference exploring new analytic approaches, including machine learning, cognitive computing, and big data.  A primary goal of NYU Tandon’s 6th Annual Conference on Human Capital Innovation in Technology and Analytics is to assess how such approaches can identify and implement passages to organizational success.

The free event will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017, in downtown Brooklyn and will feature prominent thought leaders and experts from industry and academia. Co-sponsored by Mercer and SAP SuccessFactors, the conference is presented in cooperation with PolySHRM, the award-winning student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management, and IHRIM (the International Association of Human Resource Information Management).

“Firms have now begun to focus on innovative research utilizing human capital analytics to better understand the dynamics of career paths and the interventions that can promote success,” explains Professor of Management Harold G. Kaufman, who organized the conference. “Executives, managers, and other professionals, from human capital analytics experts to HR generalists, will greatly benefit from this valuable opportunity to network with leaders in an emerging field and learn about how cutting-edge career path analytics can help win the War for Talent.”

Opening speakers will include Kaufman; Mick Collins, SAP SuccessFactors global vice president for solution architecture and advisory; and Paul Horn, NYU’s senior vice provost for research and a former vice president and executive director of research at IBM.

  • “Compelling Careers – Moving from Career Maps to Experience Maps” – Roberto Meza, global head of talent development at AIG
  • “How Cognitive Computing is Helping Employees Shape Their Careers” – Dr. Anshul Sheopuri, director, people analytics and cognitive offerings at IBM, and Tanya Moore, director, career and skills at IBM
