Information Technology Allowing Seniors to Make a Living Post-Retirement

seniors continue to earn money after retirement thanks to technology

Retirement is not what it used to be. At present, 3 in 10 working Americans are not confident that they are financially prepared for retirement.  Furthermore, a survey conducted by the Employee Benefit Research Institute found that only 1 in 10 individuals have a formal retirement plan in place. Taking these figures into consideration it is no surprise that countless seniors choose to continue working, even if only in a part-time capacity, after they retire. IT has made it possible for seniors to not only keep their minds active after they stop working, but to conveniently earn an income from home as well.  There are a number of internet-based opportunities, such as the following, that can empower retirees to remain financially independent for many years to come.

Writing

Thanks to information technology it is becoming increasingly easier for retirees to engage in online article writing from the comfort of their own homes. There are numerous websites and writing platforms such as Freelancer and Upwork that pair freelance writers with paying customers. The beauty of online writing is that you are never too old to do it. As long as you have access to a working computer and reliable internet connection you can put your writing skills to good use and earn an income well past your retirement. Most online writing sites pay their writers through Paypal making it imperative to open an account if you donโ€™t already have one.

Virtual customer service representative

Countless big companies such as Siemens and IBM rely on outsourced customer services due to it not only being more cost-effective but privy to improved back-room operations as well. The amount of work you will have to do varies according to the company you work for, but generally starts at around 20 hours a week which equates to roughly 4 hours a day (if you work a 5-day week of course). While having a background in customer service will be beneficial, it is not compulsory. As long as you have access to a good computer, high-speed internet and a landline telephone you can apply for a part-time job as a virtual customer care consultant. If you are unsure of whether your PC meets the requirements, check your onboard processor (or ask someone to check it for you). As long as you have at least a Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz processor at your disposal, you should be able to perform the required tasks without any problems. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), as of May 2015 customer service representatives earn a median hourly rate of $15.25 with some companies even providing health, vision and dental benefits.

Online tutoring

Isnโ€™t it amazing that technology allows students to receive tutoring across any distance?  Online tutoring can prove to be very financially rewarding, especially if you have an educational background (although it is not a prerequisite).  There are a number of websites such as tutor.com that will help market your services to prospective students or you can, alternatively, go solo and pick up work at your own pace. Once you have made the decision to start tutoring you need to ensure you have the right equipment for the job.  Apart from a good PC or laptop, you will also require a webcam, microphone, headphones and secure internet access. The majority of online tutoring sessions take place via Skype which requires an internet connection of at least 400 kbps (standard Cable or DSL connection ). Online tutoring hours are flexible with pay generally ranging between $10 and $20 per hour which can accumulate nicely during the course of the month.

Technology to enhance your online working experience

As we grow older we might not be also to see quite as well as we did in our younger years. As frustrating as this may be it is a perfectly normal part of the aging process. Luckily there are a number of tools available that will make it easier to conduct online work from home. Typing becomes significantly easier when you use one of the latest large print keyboards on the market. Not only are the letters printed in large, bold fonts but you can also choose the color combination that is most beneficial for you. When working as a customers sales representative or online tutor you will also require a good headset and microphone. As our hearing often deteriorates as we grow older it is important to use a headset that will amplify audio while reducing background noise. Plantronics has a range of Bluetooth headsets that can pair either with your PC or your smartphone and that offers the crystal-clear, amplified sound that seniors require.

The decision to work after your retirement may, unfortunately, not be as easy as what it is necessary.  Fortunately, thanks to constantly evolving technology, it is becoming increasingly easier to work part-time from home, allowing a retiree to earn a living without having to face demanding office hours and a daily commute.
